Renee Kypriotis

Renee is a Greek-Australian writer, director, actor and occasional production designer currently based between Sydney & Athens. Prior to completing her Bachelor of Film and Television at Swinburne University, she garnered over five years of acting and directing experience through both structured training and short courses (NIDA, Melbourne Actor’s Lab & Peter Sardi’s Acting school), as well as through industry experience working across a range of different formats such as music videos, narrative and commercial where she now continues to hone her craft to create meaningful and emotionally resonant stories.

Her most recent short film, RAGE, was made with the support of the City of Melbourne Annual Arts Grants Program. The film was a major success, drawing over 300 attendees to its opening night, and was selected for festivals both nationally and internationally including St Kilda Film Festival and SXSW Sydney, where it was in contention for Best Short Film. It then went on to screen at the Aegean Film Festival, and Melbourne Women in Film Festival, where it won Best Victorian Short Film.

Her most recent acting role was in Lodestar (dir. Maxine Zanoni), which premiered at Melbourne International Film Festival before screening at Flickerfest and St Kilda Film Festival. Most recently, she worked as Production Designer on the feature film Mad Rush (dir. Maddelin McKenna), which will premiere at this year's Melbourne International Film Festival.

Renee is a recipient of the Emerging Artist Grant from The Ian Potter Cultural Trust, which enabled her to undertake a mentorship with Girls in Film and an artist residency at Lakkos in Greece, where she developed her next short film, Prime Rib, which is set to shoot in Athens next year. Renee is also currently in development for her debut feature film.

Renee’s work reflects her versatility as a filmmaker and her passion for creating authentic and impactful films. She believes the strongest stories emerge through collaboration, placing creative partnerships at the centre of her filmmaking process. She also co-runs the independent production company Almanac, which fosters connections within the local filmmaking community through initiatives such as its annual short film screenings at the Coburg Drive-In Cinema, alongside the development and production of original projects.
