Zillah Rauter is a London-based director whose work draws deeply from her own experiences; emotionally driven, rhythmically paced, and visually stylised. She explores human connection, identity and grief through an intimate lens, balancing unconventional comedy with emotive heft. Approaching storytelling with empathy and sensitivity, she places consent and meaningful engagement at the heart of her process.
After graduating with a degree in journalism from the University of the Arts London, Zillah went on to focus on using photography as her primary tool of expression, influencing her observant cinematic style. Over time, her desire to give a more three-dimensional voice to her subjects led her to the expansive world of film. Being untethered to a specific medium or storytelling tradition, her work is unbounded and characterised by a bold visual and narrative style. In 2025, she made her directorial debut with “Kamouflage”, a portrait of identity and loss through the life of protagonist Fudge. She then directed the music video for Iona Zajac’s ‘Murder Mystery’, a surrealist, narrative-led film which again explored the nuanced harmony of the beautiful and ugly. Her ongoing multimedia project ‘Mothers’ Shame’ tackles the unspoken complexities created by female familial relationships in a patriarchal world.
