A cinematic portrait of new motherhood to get at the deeper truth of the experience through jarring imagery and dream logic. The film merges images from the director's everyday life — intimate moments she has shared with her son — with imagery from legend, folklore and art — the imagery of motherhood that proliferates her culture. The film was inspired by the works of Maya Deren and Agnes Varda. In that spirit, she decided to document her own experience as a new mother and appear in the film with her 10 month old son. For the voiceover, she drew on her diaries and dream journals from her immediate postpartum period.
Most mothers Vika knows have at some point dealt with mental health issues as a result of postpartum depression or simply burnout. Authors like Anna Mathur, filmmakers like Maggie Gyllenhaal and therapists like Lisa Marchiano have done alot to help women to speak out about the duality of their experiences (the complex spectrum of emotions that lies outside the pristine, selfless narrative of motherhood) and broach the subject of maternal rage that for so long was considered taboo.
The director hopes this film will expand that conversation and become an eye-opening insight for those on the outside of the experience.
