May takes us on a journey exploring explanations for her sisters new look such as: gravitating towards a burger shop, staining her top, a hair dye accident, and emerging from an egg. All while discovering herself.
Director Samantha Locock says, ‘we didn't initially set out to tell an autistic story. Initially this was just a silly comedy I thought up after I got fixated on this idea of goths always being the same age, however when I got diagnosed during pre-production it became clear that May has always been an autistic character. This film is neurodivergent representation without the focus purely being about autism. We have had neurodivergent audience members tell us this felt like they saw themself on screen, it feels like if you know you know with some of the mannerisms and quirks.’
This project sees Emily Carey (Geek Girl) and Lola Blue (Emmy nominee for A Kind of Spark) work together for the first time, having both starred in shows about autistic girls.
