Drama about nuances of a queer relationship and new ways of queer community celebratinos

An intimate drama following Esther and Chioma as they navigate the nuances of their relationship. They find themselves at a Ghanaian naming ceremony where they are invited to reconnect in a rhythmic celebration of diasporic Black queer joy.

Esther and Chioma try to connect as Chioma struggles to fully understand the nuances of Esther’s life as a non-binary person. But through a queering of a Ghanaian naming ceremony, the couple are invited to reconnect in a rhythmic celebration of diasporic Black queer joy. The film was made with a mostly Black & Global Majority queer cast and crew in Manchester.

The director Savannah Acquah says: 'Dzifa was made as a celebration of Black queer joy. The film aims to truthfully acknowledge the multifaceted experiences of young Black queer people living in the UK, particularly wanting to rewrite depictions of a solely homophobic West African 'Motherland', highlighting the possibility for hope and a Black queer utopia that can be discovered through Ghanaian traditions.'
