Directed by Kate Emerick and produced by Farrell Huntley, She’s the King is the second installment of Emerick’s film series, Women at Work, which explores the diverse and often untold stories of women in their professions. Inspired by the anthology, ‘Working’ by Studs Turkel, Emerick wanted to bring to life a snapshot of these women at work–but playfully–subverting her audience ever so slightly; toying with their preconceived notions of things like marriage, gender roles, and well, Elvis. Though the film creatively reenacts the unique work of its subject, the woman portrayed—Holly Vaughn—is real, as is her job. After months of interviews with Vaughn–a Las Vegas artist, officiant, and Elvis impersonator–Emerick developed a script that reflects Vaughn’s eccentric career. While Women at Work is not documentary per se, it highlights the authentic lives and labor of real women, who get to play themselves. It’s in this collaboration, both with the women highlighted in each vignette as well as the women and queer people who help bring the series to life, that Emerick encourages, “that thing that is so magic about women working and celebrating their work together.” You can find the first film in the Women at Work series, 'STOMP', on Girls in Film.
