This lyrical documentary exposes Poland's hidden abortion stories, weaving together real confessions from clinics to bedrooms, where silence becomes both protection and oppression.

MATKA / POLKA [MOTHER / POLE] is a meditation on what it means to be a woman in today's Polish society. As a collection of stories — all verbatim — from waiting rooms, gynaecology chairs, abortion clinics, and bedrooms, the film breaks the taboo around the experiences of women facing the country's strict reproductive policy and social prejudices to reclaim their own bodies.

Since its premiere, the film has screened internationally, winning Best Documentary at Women X Festival 2022 (UK), Best Experimental Film at Izmir International Women Filmmakers Festival 2023 (Turkiye), and the Kinematografek Jury Award at Spektrum Film Festival 2023 (Poland).

Director Joanna Suchomska said: "Many people don't realise access to abortion in Poland is dire. Since 2021, it's largely illegal. Emergency contraception is not readily available, either. When I started working on MATKA / POLKA in 2020, I wanted to shed light on this situation – my hope back then was that the film would become a sort of time capsule and that by the time it finished its festival cycle, the reality would have improved. Sadly, the opposite happened. Reproductive justice continues to be a polarising issue when all it should really be about is basic healthcare. I want to dedicate this film to the brave people who shared their stories with me, and also to activists on the ground who are trying to change the situation every day."
