An ode to a postbox painted gold, and the mood that birthed it.

The Golden Postbox is a short documentary capturing the trials and tribulations of a postbox in Sheffield. Having been illustriously painted gold in the peak of 2012, this wry, and probably tear-jerking, 3-minute film documents the postbox's changing relationship to a changing city. The film was shot in 1 day another on a 2012 camcorder, and edited in another, as a commission for the 2024 Filmmaker Challenge at Sheffield Doc Fest. It was nominated for best micro-short at the 2025 BFI Future Film Festival & won the Audience Choice Award at Canon Stories in Motion competition.

Ok that's the official synopsis, but as the back story — Julia hadn’t thought about our Golden Postboxes for ages until a friend of hers from Chester mentioned her nearest one. She started to do more digging and the more she read about the postboxes’ story, the more she was completely drawn in. She found out that the postboxes were initially painted as a temporary measure, but people got so excited that it had to be made permanent. She was overwhelmed with 2012 nostalgia —like when the Queen jumped out of the helicopter at the Olympic opening ceremony and we all lost our minds, drawing moustaches on our fingers etc. So much seemed to have changed since 2012. And Julia wanted to capture that in this very short film. Also just to add a big thank you to the people of Sheffield for being so open to speaking to her about their postbox <3
